It usually takes under a year’s worth of time to build a typical house. What would happen if a building took almost 150 years though? On June 10th 2026 La Sagrada Família building, which means holy family building, was blessed by Pope Leo the 14th after being almost finished. This building is very important to the whole world but especially in Barcelona Spain because it has been under construction since 1882. In 1882, electricity was just recently invented leaving and this building was even a greater challenge to start back then. The building, also called The Tower of Jesus Christ, is 566 feet tall, has 18 towers, and still isn’t fully completed. Even though the building has been passed down across five generations of workers and was damaged during the Spanish War, the building has hit a milestone where it is mostly done.
After hitting this milestone, 120,000 people gathered in the streets near the building along with King Felipe VI, Queen Leticia, as well as Spain’s prime Minister. The ceremony culminated in a show created for the occasion, illuminating the Tower of Jesus Christ over the sky of Barcelona in a tribute to Gaudi’s work on it. Antony Gaudí was a famous architect that was primarily responsible for the Tower of Jesus Christ. Antony Gaudí always knew that a building with this much prestige would take lots of time and responded when asked if the building would be completed that “my client is not in a hurry.” Gaudí built this basilica, which is a special type of Catholic Church, to be tall enough to oversee the city, but not tall enough to surpass God’s natural work.
